LA TRAVIATA
GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813-1901)
OPERA
Opera in three acts
Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave,
based on La dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas
First performed at la Fenice in Venise, March 3rd, 1853
Though Verdi was always inspired by the great epics or tragedies, Traviata begins as the simple tale of a woman, contemporary of the composer, a courtesan who has succeeded in leaving her circumstances behind but is then sacrificed by an order which would never accept her in the end. Out of this storyline, Verdi created a masterpiece and a myth that only the greatest interpreters can tackle.
